Here on the Meet the Maker series we hope to introduce you to the local artists and creators from York Region. This week, I want to invite you to meet Teenna from Aiki Skin !
Tell us a bit about yourself and one interesting fact.
I’ll soon be going off mat leave (my son is nearly 1!) and back to work full time as a graphic designer. I am also restarting courses at the Institute of Holistic Nutrition. I’m really going to miss being with my little guy 24/7 – those first few weeks will be super tough! But it’ll be more interesting to see how that new dynamic (with work/school, AIKI SKIN, and homelife) will play out…
What is the story behind your business name?
I wanted a name that was different. Something you wouldn’t find on google or see anyplace else, so it took a while and I went through a bunch of options while consulting with a few individuals to help me select a good name. I happened along “AIKI” while looking into Asian terms – it means “fusion of energy” or “in sync with energy”. Breaking it into two – “Ai” means “love” and “Ki” is a term used for “life energy” in Asian culture. And as someone who’s always been interested in health and wellness, and a believer in the power of energy, I fell in love with the name. I also felt the meaning encapsulated another component I wanted to include in my line – something I’m hoping to have time to expand on more this new year… the importance of internal health and wellness for beautiful skin.
What drew you to holistic skincare and where do you get inspiration for developing new products?
I would LOVE it if I could do this full time! I love interacting with my customers, discussing their needs, and just feeling like I’m in the business of pampering oneself! I’m currently just finishing up mat leave with my first child and he keeps me quite busy! I try to squeeze in time wherever possible, mostly after I put him to sleep for the night. Once I’m back at work full time and continuing my certification in holistic nutrition, I’m going to have to be quite diligent with my time. Most importantly, I want to remember to be in the moment when I do get to spend time with my son. This year has gone by so quickly – I know the next few will fly by and I want to make sure I’m as present as possible with him whenever we’re spending time together.
What led you to open an etsy store? The huge community aspect! Etsy is such a well-known and trusted source for beautiful goods created by real people who are passionate about what they do, and I wanted to see what it would be like to be a part of something like that. Being a partof Etsy York Region has been an invaluable experience so far – introducing me to other amazing local artisans, and providing more opportunities for exposure than I would have had otherwise.
What are you plans for your shop down the road?
